Finding the right lotion for your baby sprout

Everyone knows little babies have extremely sensitive skin. When I was preparing for my baby sprout I was convinced that Kiehl’s was going to be the right brand for my little one. After all, my extremely picky sister- in-law used it for my nephew and he had/has gorgeous skin. I bought their cleaners for the body, cleaner for the face, diaper rash cream, and their baby cream. All of their products do not have a strong scent so it was a plus for me. But when I started using their baby cream on my little one, she had some breakouts so I stopped using it. To this day I use their cleaners and the diaper rash cream and I am extremely poor (since they are really pricey) but very happy with the result. If you are looking to buy Kiehl’s products in the Los Angeles Area and save some money, go get it at Blooming’s which is located inside Koreatown Plaza. (Koreatown Plaza is located on the corner of Western and 9th st. in Koreatown) Blooming’s always pays the sales tax for you so you can save almost 10% if you are buying from them.

Since my bean’s skin didn’t agree with the Kiehl’s lotion, I started reading through mommy chat rooms for the right lotion for her. Lots of moms who had babies with sensitive skin raved about Cetaphil Cream. So I switched. I liked the price too. (much cheaper than Kiehl’s) Her skin got better within couple of days so I was pretty happy with it. As I was reading more on chat rooms, I found out that it had some chemicals that might not be so good for such a young baby so I switched again. I didn’t have to switch to a new one because it was working fine for my bean sprout but after hearing that it has chemicals I just wasn’t too comfortable using it on my little precious bean.

There are so many organic lotions out there but based on the convenience factor (if I forget to order it online before it runs out I can run to the closest Whole Foods and pick one up) I have been using California Baby Moisturizing Cream for the past 3 days and so far and my little one’s skin and I are both happy.

So future mommys who are reading, you might have to go through a couple brands of lotion before you settle on one, so don’t stockpile on lotion before your baby sprout is born. I learned my lesson.

Spasilk bodysuits are the best

When I dress my little bean, I always put a bodysuit on her under any other clothing. I think of it as her underwear. That way her belly is never exposed so I don’t have to worry constantly if she is properly covered and protected from elements. I also believe it keeps her diaper in place better.

One of the bodysuits I purchased was SpaSilk 100% Cotton Assorted Short Sleeve Lap Shoulder 7-Pack Bodysuit and these are one of the best.

It’s not too expensive, so you can buy more than one pack so you can just change your little one and toss it in the laundry and also it’s very soft for your baby’s skin.spasilk

Getting in shape

With my baby here and growing, I’m trying to do the opposite, slim down. As I observe how much energy my child has now, and she’s only 4months old, I worry about being able to keep up with her. My plan is two fold. I’m taking off an hour for lunch and walking a brisk mile, and I’ve also joined a rock climbing gym which rules. Wish me luck, I know I’m going to have to have a lot of energy to keep up with this bundle of joy.

What should be in a First Aid kit for your child and you

As our little baby bean gets older I can see how she can get herself in trouble. She already scratched her face with her nails numerous times and hit her little noggin on the edge of the table. So it got me thinking it is definitely time to get my little bean’s first aid kit together. So armed with CVS coupons, I am setting out to grab necessary items for her first aid kit.

• Infant and/or child thermometers (both digital and ear or rectal).

• Children’s and infants’ non-aspirin liquid pain reliever (acetaminophen), as recommended by your pediatrician.

• Topical calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream (1/2 percent) for insect bites and rashes.

• Rubbing alcohol to clean thermometers, tweezers, and scissors.

• Petroleum jelly to lubricate rectal thermometers.

• An antiseptic skin cleaner, such as Hibiclens (don’t use hydrogen peroxide, which causes tissue damage).

• Antibacterial cream, also for cuts and scrapes.

• Tweezers for removing splinters and ticks.

• A pair of sharp scissors.

• Pediatrician-approved children’s-strength liquid decongestant.

• Nasal aspirator bulb (not a pointy-ended ear syringe).

• An assortment of adhesive bandage strips in various sizes and shapes (for children’s sensitive skin, , get the less-sticky kind).

• Gauze rolls (1/2 to 2 inches wide).

• Gauze pads (2 by 2 and 4 by 4 inches).

• Adhesive tape.

• Sterile cotton balls.

• Cotton-tipped swabs.

• Mild liquid soap (most antibacterial and deodorant soaps are too strong for babies’ sensitive skin).

• An oral syringe or calibrated cup or spoon for administering medicines to infants and children.

• A hot-water bottle and an ice pack.

• A small flashlight to check ears, nose, throat, and eyes.

• First-aid manual

• Rehydration fluids, such as Pedialyte.

In addition to the items listed on this list you should also have a little print out of the important phone numbers within the kit, so it’s readily available when you need it.

  1. family doctor and/or pediatrician
  2. local children’s hospital
  3. American Association of Poison Control Centers’ national emergency hotline: (800) 222-1222
  4. Your local police, fire, and rescue squad
  5. emergency contact information(such as your work number, closest neighbor, friend)

Rock climbing anyone?

My husband and I just found out that there is a indoor rock climbing gym right by our house called Rockreation. We went by this weekend and we can’t wait to try it out. The facility is so much nicer and roomier than what it looks like from the outside, and people who worked there were very nice and helpful.

If you and your family is interested, they have classes for ages 6 and up so rather than looking for a baby sitter for your child, you can take them with you and make it a family event!

(Oh I hear rock climbing can do wonders for your figure too)

Rockreation is located at :

11866 La Grange Ave

West Los Angeles, CA 90025
