Demons, Angels, and Monsters: The Supernatural in ArtPart of the Getty Center’s Audio Tour Program

Before kids grab a bag of Halloween loot, they can grab an iPod Touch® and explore the art of fright with a new audio tour at the Getty Center. Demons, Angels, and Monsters: The Supernatural in Art features otherworldly figures depicted in works of art from the Getty Museum’s permanent collection. For a limited time (through February 5, 2012) all audio tours at the Getty Center are free, providing a Halloween treat for the whole family.

Created by kids for kids, the audio tour features imaginative children sharing their impressions of troublemaking demons, flying superhero angels, and a charming dragon. Whether angelic or sinister, the art reveals how past cultures have viewed the supernatural, and how belief in such creatures influenced everyday life.

The tour includes paintings, sculpture, and stained glass by such artists as Gauguin, Tiepolo, and Bernini.

Demons, Angels, and Monsters: The Supernatural in Art is suitable for children, tweens, or anyone with a sense of fun. All Getty Center audio tours are free through February 5, 2012.

GARDEN CONCERTS FOR KIDS at the Getty Center (Saturdays and Sundays, August 6—21, 2011)

The J. Paul Getty Museum presents Garden Concerts for Kids this August, a free annual outdoor music series for kids and their families in the Getty Center’s Central Garden featuring some of the best children’s musical artists from across the nation.

Garden Concerts for Kids kicks off this summer with LA-based Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band on August 6 and 7. One of the brightest new artists on the kids’ music scene, this Silver Lake trio was named the best new kids’ artist of 2010 by USA Today. Their fresh rockabilly, retro tunes, and indie goodness open the concert series, with songs from their brand new album, Oh Lucky Day!

The following weekend, August 13 and 14, Grammy nominated Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could will get every family up and dancing with their energetic beats. They are a rollicking back-porch rock ‘n’ roll band with a feel-good R & B foundation. According to National Public Radio, they “might just be the best-sounding band in children’s music.”

Closing out the season on August 20 and 21 singer-guitarist Frances England will bring her warm, indie-folk melodies and alt-rock rhythms to the Getty. Performing from her brand new Parent’s Choice Gold Award-winning album, Mind Of My Own, England will sing about bicycles, ladybugs, and Jacques Cousteau. England’s incredibly creative and slightly off-beat take on family life has inspired a world of fans since her 2007 breakout album, Fascinating Creatures.

The Garden Concerts for Kids are held in the Central Garden at the Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Drive, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Admission is free, and no reservations are required.

I love going to Hollywood Bowl. The venue, warm weather, people, music and food… what is there not to like?

Hollywood Bowl offers classes for little ones and here is the description of the program and its’ 2011 schedule.

SummerSounds, our popular music and arts festival for kids at the Hollywood Bowl, returns with a musical journey through Los Angeles, one of the most exciting cities in the world, where diverse cultures influence and enrich one another in unique ways. Each SummerSounds program features live music and dance, plus art workshops guided by professional artists.

This season’s lineup includes:

The Korean Classical Music and Dance Company (July 5-15) – authentic Korean music with unique instruments and exciting, elegant fan dances
Sylvia St. James & the St. James Singers (July 18-29) – joyful gospel music
Ken O’Malley (August 1-12) – a feisty blend of traditional and new Irish folk music

Magician, escape artist, and showman extraordinaire Harry Houdini (1874–1926) has remained an object of fascination for generations. Combining biographical and historical artifacts with contemporary art inspired by his physical audacity and celebrity, Houdini: Art and Magic explores Houdini as an individual and an enduring cultural phenomenon, documenting the period in American history when the young Jewish immigrant helped shape the cultural landscape and became an acknowledged mass-market star.

Featuring more than 150 objects—including film clips, stunning period posters, dramatic theater ephemera, rare photographs, original props (including a straitjacket, milk can, and Metamorphosis Trunk used by Houdini), and the work of select avant-garde artists—the exhibition reveals Houdini’s legacy as an iconic figure, both in his time and in ours, who has inspired artists today to reconsider his role as a daring persona.

I considered sending my little bean to Delphi Academy until Lawrence Wright’s New Yorker article came out titled The Apostate regarding Church of Scientology. If you haven’t read it, please do. It’s a great but LONG article.

That article made me pause a little about sending Little M full time at Delphi, but maybe Summer Camp program looks great! She’s only 2, and Delphi’s summer camp is for kids between 4 and 11 years old so she won’t be able to attend for another two years.

Explorers Summer Day Camp

Huntington Explorers is a summer day camp in July and August with new and exciting classes each year geared for children ages 5-12. The classes celebrate the wonders of The Huntington through garden explorations, hands-on activities, gallery investigations and educational fun.

Mark your calendars with these important 2011 dates:

March 2011: New class descriptions and registration forms will be available online.

April 2011: Processing of registration forms begins. Classes are filled lottery-style until all spaces are assigned. Confirmations are sent by mail.

The Huntington Explorers summer day camp is a three week program for children ages 5–12. Sign up for one week, two weeks, or all three. Half days (one class, morning or afternoon): Members: $155/week. Non-Members: $170/week. Full days (two classes, with supervised lunch): Members: $290/week. Non-Members: $320/week.

Children’s Workshop: The Art of Japanese Tea

March 5 (Saturday)

Kids can explore the stories and customs of Japan in this cooking workshop led by chef Maite Gomez-Réjon.
